Health Care Plan

Eligibility for NWT Health Care
Any permanent resident of the NWT is eligible for coverage. To be considered a permanent resident, you must be legally entitled to remain in Canada, make your home in and be present in the NWT for at least six months of the year. Making your home means receiving mail, keeping personal property and spending the majority of your time in the NWT.

Applications forms are available at health facilities, the Health Services Administration Office in Inuvik or online.

Coverage by NWT Health Care
The following services are covered by NWT Health:

  • standard accommodation and meals, nursing services, operating, case & anaesthetic rooms and drugs administered in hospital
  • lab, x-ray, and diagnostic procedures
  • radiotherapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy

The following services are NOT covered by NWT Health:

  • hospital charges beyond standard rooming/meals
  • non-medically required services, including cosmetic and experimental procedures
  • ambulance charges
  • alcohol or drug rehabilitation, unless approved
