Eligibility
To be eligible for YHCIP and its programs, you must be legally entitled to be in Canada, and a resident of Yukon. You must register with either a Territorial Agent or at the Health Care Insurance Office in Whitehorse.
Programs
Insured Health and Hearing Services
Basic coverage for medically necessary services, such as hospitalization. The programs listed below are offered by IH&HS.
- Children’s Drug + Optical provides assistance for low-income families for prescription drugs, glasses, and eye exams for kids.
- Chronic Disease Program provides financial assistance for drugs, medical/surgical supplies and other medically necessary items.
- Extended Health Care Benefits to Seniors assists with the cost of medical supplies and equipment, dental care, optical care, and other services for persons over 65 years old. Spouses over 60 years old who are not covered by private insurance are covered as well.
- Pharmacare provides assistance with the cost of medically necessary prescription drugs for Yukon residents who are 65 years old. Spouses over 60 years old who are not covered by private insurance are covered as well.
Coverage
The following services are covered by YHCIP:
- standard accommodation and meals, nursing services, operating, case and anaesthetic rooms, and drugs administered in hospital
- radiotherapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy
The following services are NOT covered by NWT Health:
- hospital charges beyond standard rooming/meals and private nursing, unless medically necessary
- non-medically required services, including cosmetic surgery
- experimental procedures
