Eligibility for Medicare
To apply for Medicare, you must be legally entitled to remain in Canada and be a resident of New Brunswick, making your permanent and principle home in New Brunswick. You must renew your Medicare card before its expiry date to maintain coverage.
Basic Medicare Coverage
NB Medicare covers:
- Most medically required services provided by physicians or approved hospitals
- Some surgical dental procedures when medically necessary and in an approved hospital
Some medical practitioners may choose to bill you directly, or in excess pf what Medicare will cover. They must inform you ahead of time, and you must sign a waiver of understanding.
The following are some of the hospital services covered:
- Standard accommodation and meals
- Nursing service
- Operating, delivery and anesthetic facilities
- Lab, x-ray and other diagnostic services
The following are some of the services NOT insured:
- Ambulance services
- Cosmetic surgeries
- Third party physicals
- Acupuncture, chiropractic, dentist, naturopathic, opticians, orthodontic, pharmacists, and physiotherapists
Coverage of Ostomy Supplies
New Brunswick does not provide any coverage of ostomy supplies for most groups.
Family and Community Services provides the Health Services Ostomy/Incontinence Program, which funds ostomy supplies to approved clients.
Client Advocacy Services
Provides advocacy, information and support for clients on issues of non-payment, eligibility, etc.
