Eligibility
To qualify for Manitoba Health, you must be entitled to be in Canada, hold permanent residence in Manitoba and physically be present in Manitoba at least six months in a calendar year.
Application
To receive your Manitoba Health card, you must register with Manitoba Health. The application forms are found online and can be mailed to Client Services or taken to the City of Winnipeg offices.
Coverage
Manitoba Health directly pays physicians’ services that are medically necessary. Eligible Manitobans receive coverage for:
- physicians’ services and insured services by physicians practicing outside the Program
- standard accommodation and meals, medications, and use of operating rooms, care rooms, anaesthetic facilities, necessary nursing services, routine surgical supplies, laboratory, x-ray and diagnostic procedures while in hospital
- occupational, speech and physiotherapy, dietetic counselling
- patients living north of the 53rd parallel in Manitoba may be given a subsidy for transportation to and from specialty medical care
The following are some of the services NOT covered by Manitoba Health:
- care and treatment covered by Workers’ Compensation Board, Veterans’ Services or other statute
- services not medically required, including third party physicals
- drugs and supplies, except as provided for under the regulations
- private nursing or additional charges for private or semi-private rooms
- services performed by psychologists, dietitians, chiropodists, podiatrists, audiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, acupuncture, chiropractic and physiotherapists outside of hospital care
