Saskatchewan Health

Eligibility
Canadian citizens and landed immigrants who make their homes in Saskatchewan and ordinarily live in the province for at least 6 months of each year are eligible for provincial health care. Some other groups, such as those on Student Authorization, may be eligible and should contact Health Registration to find out. To register for health care, fill out the form.

Coverage
The following are some of the services free of charge to all Saskatchewan Health cardholders:

  • all medically necessary services performed by physicians
  • physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • immunizations (including the flu shot for those 65 and older or at high risk)

The following services are partially covered for all Saskatchewan Health cardholders:

  • home care and long-term care centers
  • chiropractic, podiatry, dental, and audiology services
  • prescription drugs (for SHP, SAIL and palliative care; also Special Support Program)

The following services are some of the services not covered by Saskatchewan Health:

  • in- or out-patient service for reasons other than medical necessity (incl. cosmetic surgery)
  • private or semi-private hospital rooms, unless ordered by a physician
  • physiotherapy and occupational therapy performed by therapists not under contract with a district health board
  • examinations requested by third parties
  • appliances taken home from a hospital
  • over-the-counter medications

Fees
For those services practicing “inside the plan,” physicians, optometrists, dentists and specialists should not charge patients a fee in addition to what SH has paid for a covered service. Some service providers may choose to work “outside the plan,” in which case they must practice entirely outside the plan, warn their patients in advance that their services are not insured, and provide the choice to see practitioners working within the plan. If a patient chooses care outside the plan, they must pay the full costs.
