Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is characterized by a back-flow of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus. Associated with a malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter, its main symptom is chronic heartburn. If you suffer from this acid reflux more than twice a week, you may actually have GERD.
